Welcome to week 8 of term 4, and the final short week of the 2011 school year and wow what a busy year it has been, but a good one finishing with a great ERO visit and oral report.

Junior Room - Wk 6 & 7 - All junior room certificates were given out at assembly. Congratulations to all our junior room students for a great terms work!!

Senior Room - Wk 6 - Travis and Brooke. Travis for excellent decoding of words and improved accuracy in reading, plus the teaching of others in his maths group!

Brooke for her excellent focus in all learning areas, working independently and caring about others and their learning!

Wk 7 - Ben and Ashleigh. Ben for his excellent reading stamina and for his great positive attitude to all areas of learning!

Ashleigh for her excellent responsibility as a leader putting together the school magazine!

Our congratulations to Daniel H on winning the senior boys champion cup.

Thank you to those parents who helped Mary and Nicki in the junior shot-put and the senior high jump events - this was most appreciated.

A very big thank you to those parents who helped out in any way in the lead-up to these sports, e.g Jo for organising the 'after school athletics' and her parent helpers and Blair and Richard for delivering the saw-dust for the long jump.

Assembly

Thank you to all those who attended the final assembly for 2011, it was great to have you here helping us to celebrate the students achievements for the last term.

ASSA Meeting

Thank you to all those parents who came to the ASSA meeting last Thursday evening. The meeting focussed on some very important events for 2012, but also focussed on past events.

Parents and teachers reflected on Lamb and Calf day with a list of 'positives' 'interesting' and 'negative' issues being placed on a notice board. The students will also be able to reflect on the days activities.

Library Books

Please return all Library books to school tomorrow - we still have a considerable number of books that have not yet been returned!!

School Uniforms

Thank you to those who have returned their school uniforms, however there are some still out there, please deliver them back to school tomorrow.

Swimming Lessons

These lessons continue this week - Wednesday (the 14th) and Friday (the 16th). A reminder that you need to be at the pool in time for the first lesson at 10.00a.m.

Friday will also be a fun day as after their final swimming lesson, students will be able to choose a treat from the cafeteria paid for from the Healthy Lunches proceeds. Teachers will of-course be in attendance on Friday. Please make your own transport arrangements for these final two days, but if you have difficulty with this, please contact us a.s.a.p.

The school bus will run for the final day for 2011 tomorrow (Tuesday the 13th).

School Bus

Thank you Yvonne and Mervyn for a wonderful job done as our school bus driver having delivered our school bus students safely to school and back home again and for driving the bus on a few occasions to other destinations e.g Kimbolton, for Oroua group activities. The school staff, B.O.T and parents have certainly appreciated your safety conscious skills.

A huge thank you to Murray for recently welding a handle back on to one of our Lamb and Calf Day cups - a great job done!

End of year Reports

End of year reports are currently being finalized with students and will be uploaded to your child's record keeping page.

The aim of your child's record keeping page in our e-portfolios is to provide documentation to keep you informed about the progress and achievement levels of your child in an ongoing way. This is always available for you and anyone you choose to share the password with. Remember you must use 'Google chrome' to open the 'Record keeping' page. Your child will know their password. They have also been sent home with students today.

In this way we can best work together to support and guide your child's learning and progress and you are always fully aware of all aspects of your children's learning. When you click on the links to the matrices you will see learning that has been highlighted in blue. This means that your child has achieved this is 2011. Any learning goals highlighted in rose show that your child usually knows this. The next box along will be their next learning goal. This is the same matrix that students and teachers use in the classroom to support and report on learning.

This documentation is supported by examples on all other pages of your child's e-portfolio. There is more learning evidence in other areas such as our school wiki and blogs, in their books and through wall displays at school. Celebrating and sharing evidence of your child's progress, achievements and next steps for learning helps students see their progress and motivates, challenges and empowers them as learners.

All pages of our e-portfolio work together to showcase and give you a comprehensive picture of your child's learning through our rich authentic Apiti Curriculum. Your child's report therefore may also have links to learning examples in your child's wiki.

If you would like a paper copy of your child's report, please let Mary or Nicki know. This however is only one part of our comprehensive ongoing reporting to parents.

End of Year

School will close for term 4 on Wednesday the 14th of December, but because we have swimming on Wednesday, the students will have their final day at school on Tuesday the 13th (tomorrow). Students will uplift their books from school on this day.

Term 1 2012 will commence on Tuesday the 7th of February at 9.00a.m.

ASSA Lotto

End of year Assembly

Our 'end of year' assembly will take place tomorrow - Thursday the 8th of December, starting at 2.30 in the senior room. All community members are most welcome to attend.

As there is an ASSA meeting at 5.30, and several people have said how busy they are, we have decided to forgo the community BBQ tea and instead have a community afternoon tea at the conclusion of assembly. Could we please ask every family to bring along a plate for afternoon tea.

We will still have games between afternoon tea and the ASSA meeting. If anyone has a particular game or games to play in mind, please organise it, otherwise our students will organise some games/sports but they may need some equipment from home, e.g tennis rackets for those wanting to play tennis.

As we would like every family to be represented at the ASSA meeting but finds it difficult to organise a baby-sitter, please let us know so we can arrange a baby-sitter for you at school.

If you have any queries regarding the above, please don't hesitate to contact Mary or Nicki.

Library Books

Please return all Apiti School library books back to school before the end of the year as we need to carry out a library stocktake.

School Uniforms

Please return all clean Apiti School uniforms back to school as soon as possible.

Swimming Lessons

Please contact us if you are unable to organise transport for your children on either of these days.

End of School Year

As we finish school next Wednesday the 14th, but will be at swimming, students will have their last day at school on Tuesday (the 13th). Students will therefore bring their year books home on Tuesday.

Dear parents,

Just a few house-keeping details :-

A reminder that it is the Oroua Group of Schools Athletics this Friday, the 2nd of December. It looks like it could be a warm day, so we encourage you to please make sure your child/ren have plenty to drink, a sun-hat and plenty of sunscreen (adults as well), as well as a good packed lunch and they also must wear their school uniform.

You must have your children at Timona Park by 9.35 please. You need to arrange your own transport to and from this event.

Please make yourself available to help out Mary and Nicki at their stations at some stage during the day (ideally while your child is participating in that particular activity).

For the senior students (age 8 upwards), the day will conclude after the relays and prize giving- about 2ish. If parents leave the grounds, please make sure you return no later than 1.45 for pick-up. For the junior students (age 5 - 7), the day will conclude after their morning circuits have been completed at about 11.30 followed by lunch.

School Photos

School photo's will be taken next Monday the 5th of December at 9.00a.m by Svendson Photography from Feilding. Pre-schoolers are welcome to come along at about 10.00 if you would like them to have photo's taken with their siblings, but please let us know if you intend to bring them down.

Weed Buster Day

The weed buster day that had earlier been advertised as happening on the 8th of December, will not now go ahead until early next year.

Accounts

Thank you to those of you who have paid your ski and stationery accounts. Those who have not paid either of these accounts, we would appreciate settlement before the end of the year if possible please.

Swimming Lessons

Just a reminder that the last two days for swimming lessons are being held on Wednesday the 14th and Friday the 16th of December. If you haven't let us know if you are able to take transport to these lessons, please do so early next week - transport arrangements will be sent home next week.

Well the the term has flown past and with it two weeks shorter than usual it is great to see the amount we have achieved this term. Programmes continue as they have all term...and all year in fact! It really was great to be able to share our learning with ERO last week and to receive such positive feedback. Well done to everyone...students, parents, teachers, BOT and community members alike. See the last post for more details.

Students are currently writing their end of year reports, with teachers, to share with you. Year 7/8 students are preparing a presentation to share their learning from our Senior Combined Survival camp and we are beginning to put together our end of year magazine to celebrate and share our learning from throughout the year. Our students really are involved in their learning for the entire year!! Great to see kids!! Keep up the good work!

Thanks

We would all like to say a huge thank you to Sheree for the great job she has done ensuring that our school pool has been in fantastic working order over the last few years. It really has been appreciated. Thanks also to Nipper for his support and expertise with pool maintenance and setting up the vacuum for us!

Deltina has offered to take responsibility for this. Thank you Deltina.

Many thanks also to Christine L, Deltina and family for the extra time and effort they put into ensuring our school looked at its best last week. We all really did feel proud to show our visitors around! Richard, Sara and Mike - thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to get our mower to town and back for maintenance and repairs. Thanks also to Richard for fixing the wheel on the sandpit and the office handle.

Run Jump Throw

Each Monday and Wednesday afternoon for the next two weeks, students will be working at school with the 'Run Jump Throw' team to improve their athletics skills. We value and plan learning experiences for our students with a range of experts. Where possible we plan these at school. However learning is for life and many valuable learning opportunities are outside our classroom environments.

Oroua Athletics Sports

A reminder that the Oroua Group of Schools Athletics are on this Friday (the 2nd December), at Timona Park in Feilding. All Apiti School students will attend this event. Please be at Timona Park by 9.30 in time to assemble at 9.45. Lunch will be at about 12.05 to 12.35 for the senior students and maybe a little earlier for the junior students. Junior students will be dismissed at lunch time and become the responsibility of their parents/caregivers. Students must wear their school uniform on this day please.

Please make sure your child has a good packed lunch, a good drink, sunscreen, a hat and clothes for all occasions.

Please transport your own children to this event or arrange transport. The school bus will not run at all on this day.

Could we ask that all parents help out at a junior (ball throw) or senior circuit (boys high jump) at some stage during the day - this would be very much appreciated.

The relays and prize giving for the senior students will be after lunch and the day should conclude at about 2.00.

Teachers Professional Development

Teachers and support staff have spent today attending a First aid course at school to keep their First aid certificates current for the safety of your children and the community. This is something that was commended by our recent ERO visitors.

Tomorrow Mary and Nicki have their final day for 2011 working with Brian Coles (in PN), our appraiser and the facilitator for our WAM Professional learning cluster. As always, classroom programmes will continue as normal.

Over the next two weeks we welcome Massey Advisors, Selina O'leary and Heather Bell, to our school. We will be working together to look at data from 2011, set new targets and plan quality learning programmes for your students in 2012. We have made the most of and appreciated the support of such professionals this year as there is no funding or advisors available from the government for professional development in 2012. We continue however to value professional learning that means better learning for your children. See the google calendar for specific dates.

News from the BOT Chairperson

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would liketo congratulate Mary & Nicki on the excellent way the School is being run.

This has become very clear to the board since the Education Review Authority (ERO), visited the School last week. They indicated the School would be given a glowing report. This is a credit to Mary, Nicki and the other staff, for all the hard work they have put in over the last few years. Our School is right up there with the best in New Zealand. The authentic Context Learning(Learning from real world experiences) really motivates the students and makes learning more fun. Our Students are achieving great results.

We look forward to seeing the AAA+ ERO report in a few weeks.

Our final meeting for the year will be held at 7pm on the 12th of December. All are welcome.

Oroua Leavers Dinner

Caleb, along with the other Oroua year 8 leavers and their parents, will be attending this next Tuesday at the Apiti Tavern. We thank June for again providing the venue and meal for this.

End of year assembly and Barbecue

Celebrations are in order !!

Education Review Officers, Michael Young and Jo Hopkins, really enjoyed visiting us and reviewing our school in totality. The reviewers spent a lot of time reviewing all of the information we sent them, in their ERO, office before visiting us. This was sent both digitally and in paper form over the last term. They spent a lot of time sharing all aspects of our school through the school blog newsletter, wiki learning portal and individual student e-portfolios. Their time at school was spent observing classes, talking to students and the Board of Trustees and observing the depth and breadth of our learning opportunities in action.

Through their observations while at our school, they confirmed all they believed based on our schoolwide infomation sent to them. They very strongly reaffirmed that the direction our school is taking engages students and promotes motivated learners, high achievement and progress is exceptionally effective and should continue.

They were extremely impressed with our motivated engaged students who, they commented, were focussed learners who both knew and could explain their learning, the level they were at and what they were working on to progress (get better). They praised our integrated approach to teaching using real life (authentic contexts) and saw them as highly effective.

'I am looking forward to working on your report over the next week or so.

Thank you again for the support you and your school community gave to the review process.

Could you please also thank the children on our behalf.

They were very open with us and you would have been pleased with the willingness and enthusiasm to share their learning with us.'

We are having a celebration / end of year assembly on Thursday the 8th of December. This will begin at 2.30pm. We plan to have a school assembly followed by games and then a community barbecue. BYO shared barbecue meat and salads. Please bring your own drinks and eating utensils. Tennis rackets and other sports gear for games would be great.

Swimming continues this Friday the 18th of November. Please remember to be there before 10.00am as the first lesson starts at 10.00. You may leave straight from home. Parents please contact your child's driver to arrange for pick up and drop off time and place.

End of School Year.

Unfortunately, there has been a miscalculation regarding the number of half days the school is open for instruction this year. We had stated we would close on Monday the 19th of December but after reviewing this we will now finish school on Wednesday the 14th of December -hopefully this will not inconvenience you in any way.

However, we do have our final swimming lessons booked for Friday the 16th of December and as we are not able to change to another day as the Makino is fully booked, we would still like parents to take this opportunity and take your students down for their lessons which will also be a fun day as there will be money made available for them to spend at the cafeteria. The teachers will of-course be in attendance and will be available to help out with transport if needed. Please let us know if this is going to be a problem for you and if your children will require transport.

Week 2:- Stanley - Understanding his learning goals and striving to achieve high standards. Stanley does a great job encouraging everyone around him to do their best.

Week 3:- Logan - Great stamina in learning; especially in reading, writing to build a picture for his audience, maths and thinking creatively. Keep up the great work Logan.

What's been happening ...

Lamb and Calf Day
This was another great learning opportunity for all. The students were justly proud of all their accomplishments. It was a great chance for you, to all see the learning they have been involved in lately at our awesome school. eg the science investigations. The full powerpoint complete with videos can be seen on the students e-portfolio wikis. Also the entries into the digi awards where we won 5 finalist spots. It was good to see the Apiti judges also saw Alex and his 'Save the Bush" Sustainability poster and Keanu and Brooke's original photos as winners.

The day ran very smoothly thanks to the weather. We would like to officially thank Christine, Pat, Mary B, and Rebekah for their work towards the day and on the day.

It was great to see so many parents / grandparents and community members here supporting the children.

A huge thank you to the following who helped out in any way during the day and made the day a great success :-

To all our parents for supplying a great afternoon tea and for all the support given to the school for raising a lamb or a calf, and of-course our great students and their lovely lambs and calves. It was wonderful to see every child in every family with either a lamb or a calf. This day creates a learning opportunity which encourages children to learn the responsibility of just how to care for a lamb or calf.

I was crossing my fingers so hard that blood could not pump through them. “Alex!”
“Yes,” thought in my head as claps rang through my ears.
“...and...”
The ‘and’ made me freeze like a Popsicle.
“Sarah!” Screaming filled the atmosphere with excitement!
“It’s a new record!” cheered Mrs Pratt.
Suddenly silence flew into the air. Certificates came and a trophy took place in Hannah and Brooke's hand. Yells rose and died again.
But now hope rested on my shoulders … Senior indoor champs were about to walk out of the dark and claim their prizes.
Stanley landed in 4th place. Ashleigh claimed a third.
“Please be Ethan, Please be Ethan, please be Ethan,” I begged.
“Tom Beard in second place.”
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I said in my head. So the champion claimed his trophy.....”Ethan.” “Tom was off by one point”
“NO!” I said out loud this time.
The whole thing changed as we got into the lamb and calf competition.
Seconds later Tyler and Alex were in ‘Ruler of the world’ poses as they held up a cup and reserve champion ribbon. My brother Alex got reserve champion.
Time flew and Ben held up a trophy.
Now I had butterflies in my stomach. It was my calf cup.

Lamb and Calf Day

The excitement was made. Riche (My lamb) and Tilly (Hayley's lamb) were calling out to Hayley and I. “Baaaaa,” as they were calling out to us.
“Logan feeding time,” Hayley yelled.
“Sorry can’t. I’m helping Ethan.”
Mum told Hayley we can’t feed the lambs because there's a feeding contest. My lamb at leading was magnificent. Then it was calling.
“Logan,” they called. “Now,” they called.
“Riche ... here Riche! Good boy,” I said to my lamb.
Then it was the drinking contest. Ready. GO!
Suck, suck, suck,(as the lambs are sucking the milk). 1st was Hannah Wills, 2nd was me, 3rd was Hayley Wilson Bryant and 4th was Huntah Digby.
At prize giving time in the lambs in care and attention … in 1st place is David, 2nd place is Charlotte, in 3rd place is Huntah and 4th Logan. For leading … 1st Charlotte, 2nd Logan, 3rd David and 4th Huntah.

Batman

I just woke when Alex put the radio on. Batman was mooing outside. I got dressed as fast as I could. Then I saw Batman … he was pleased to see me. Mum took us to school. Then I did the things inside. Dad arrived with Batman and I had to go around the ring.
4th, 3rd, 2nd,1st … there goes to Ben with Batman! “Yay,” said Mum and Grandma.
“Are you proud of me Mum?” “I am Benny!!”
Mum went inside and had a look at my work. I got two 4ths and one 3rd. I was very proud of my cup this year and I hope I win it again next year. - By Ben

I got first for my Graphic design. It’s message was ‘Recycle for the planet!’ with different colours, fonts and darkness. I got second for my science investigation. It had one big windmill in the front that was big and 2 little ones on the other sides.
My calf looked like a horse but I made it better.

The “and …” made me stop and think a bit.

“Rocky Road! Rocky Road! Come and get your Rocky Road,” I sang dancing around.
“Rocky Road in the bike shed. Only $2.00. Lots of people said they’d come back later.
Finally Dad and Lauren came in the ute with the lambs and the calf.I ran to see Lizzy.She is such a good girl. I tied her to the fence and went back to selling Rocky Road. I saw Mum and ran over to her and asked for money. She gave me $2.00. I went racing to Hannah’s table. She had been saving me one sherbet. “Yummy,” I said to myself .
Finally the lamb and calf judging started.
The senior lambs were in one ring, the juniors were in another ring and the intermediate lambs were after the seniors. When the intermediate lambs were called into the ring we sat down and listened. The judges were Mr Angove and Mr Goodall.
First we started off doing leading. Lizzy did well in the leading. Next we did leading by ourselves. I suddenly heard my name get called. We walked together. She didn’t need a tap on the bum. She just walked, sat down and watched the others.
Next was calling. I once again heard my name. I stood up and gave LIzzy to Mr Angove. I went to the other side and called Lizzy. She came straight to me. I gave Lizzy a hug and sat down again.
After leading,calling and care and attention we had a drinking race and a dress up competition. I didn’t do the dress up competition because it hurts your lamb. For the drinking race I think I came 5th.
After the lamb competition, I gave Lizzy a big hug, tied Lizzy up and ran inside to see what I got. I got 1st for my science and 3rd for my flower arrangement.
Prize giving came. First was Indoor exhibits for juniors; Alex and Sasha got that. Next intermediate; Hannah and Brooke got the cup. For seniors; Ethan got that. Next was outside. For juniors; Tyler got the cup. Intermediate ... This the moment I had been waiting for … 2nd for leading, 1st for calling and 1st for care and attention. I walked back down and felt that I had a chance for the plate.

This ramp is now officially open - we were delighted to have had Selwyn Jensen (Wal) open our new wheel-chair ramp on Lamb and Calf Day. We thank Selwyn for taking the time to travel up here to open the ramp and to spend the day with us.

Both teams represented our School fantastically and seemed to enjoy the challenge. Well done especially to Glen Tui Apiti who won the competition!!

“It’s official … we are lost,” I moaned sarcastically.

“Noo, it’s over there!” Caleb pointed out.

I slowly trudged through sloppy mud and made my way over to the tent for our briefing.

10 MINTES LATER

“OK, there are 5 stations. One is a quiz, the second is all about sheep and wool. The next one is number three. It’s all about cattle and calves. The fourth one is construction and lastly number five is about first aid. Group 1 will start at the quiz. Group 2 will start at sheep and wool. Group 3 will start at cattle. Group 4 will start at construction and group 5 will start at first aid.”

These were the instructions that we were given, so we had to listen very closely.

We were group two so we started off at sheep and wool.

We had to guess a type of wool fibre. The man didn’t tell whether it was sheep or not; it was just a type of wool fibre.

“Is it Alpaca?” Caleb guessed confidently.

With a smile the man nodded. Out of nowhere popped this guy who yelled “TIME!!” We all dipped under the fence and climbed over the gate to the next challenge… No.3: Cattle. First we had to put on two different types of halters. Then we had to work out how much profit you would make if you sold some things and the last thing was name three other things that you could purchase for a calf. The first task was harder than it sounded. We put on the first one right but the other one was just upside down. The second task was really painful because Caleb used my back as a desk.. ‘OUCH’. We were $1 down! It was $116 but we got $115. For the last thing we just told the man that we could get a lead, brush and bottle.

Then… “ TIME!!”. We moved onto the next one. Construction. The man gave the instructions and off we went. First we had to plan what our flag was going to look like. Then we got to construct it. Our flag was the only one standing. For the base we had 3 battens. For the flag it was a sack and we got to spray paint it.

“TIME” yelled the guy. We moved onto the next one … safety. This was really awkward so Caleb a

nd I left Stanley to deal with the person who had fallen off the motor bike while we checked for any damage on the motor bike. We found a flat tire, low oil, broken light and cable disconnected.

“TIME” … Over the fence, through the door and into the caravan we went for the quiz. We got our sheet and answered mostly all of the questions. 10 minutes passed by and we only had about 7 questions that we hadn't answered.

HALF AN HOUR LATER

And the top team is …. GLENTUI…. Excitement rushed through my body as I heard our team name called out. We were the TOP TEAM. The time had come for the finals. First we had to move two pallets from one end of the field to the other. We put one of the two pallets on the ground and stood on it, then put one in front and moved onto that. We weren’t allowed to touch the ground or our whole team had to stand still for 10secs. We had a big lead. Once we had got the pallet over the oink line, our team had to wash a 1/4 of a Ute, even the wheels! Then we had to find 1 of 2 needles in a haystack. But it was only a picture. Caleb found it and then we had to come up with a poem up to 20 words long and recite it to the crowd. Lastly we had to stand up our flag that we built.

Then came prize giving. Our team won a pocket knife, a 1st place ribbon and a $45 cheque for the school.

On Saturday Stan, Ashmo, Caleb, Tom, Ashley and me went to county kid show. There were five activities to do. 1 quiz, 2 sheep wool, 3 was to put some halters on two calves, 4 build a flag using 3 batons, 5 to help a girl out as she had just crashed the motorbike. My team zipped through the sheep wool like a wild cheater but we never zipped through the flag pole. We went as slow as ants.
The final 4 teams had to go across two pellets without touching the ground. Then they had to wash a quarter of a ute , find a needle in a haystack and the say an over 20 word poem and stand up their flag up
Apiti won over all.
Then Mum, Stan, Caleb, Ash, Danni, and I went inside and looked at all the animals. I got to pat a baby ostrich and pat an ostrich egg. I patted a horse too! - By Jack

Whanau Group preparation for Lamb and Calf Day

“Tom! Travis! Come look at our native area,”
Bang goes the door! Thud thud thud as we sprinted to the native area.
“Whoo this track is cool as,” said Tom in an excited voice.
“Tom come look at the bird house,” muttered Travis. Crunch crunch is officially the sound that our feet made when we walked through our track.
“We had better head back over and start on the foyer display.” We reluctantly headed back to class. “Take down everything apart from that poster and that poster.” I said.
“Chev we’ll back everything with newspaper aye,” Tom suggested
“Hey yeah. That would look pretty cool,” I replied “Tom you go and get the newspaper and I’ll go and get the goal and title. Hannah and Travis you go and start on the portfolio.”
Kss goes the newspaper and bang goes the stapler. We practically rushed and really worked as a team to get it all finished.When it came to Lamb and Calf day... “First place the recyclers!!”
We ran to help Hannah and Travis with the portfolio. Just spread them out for a bit more space. Once we were done that we were finished. We just needed to do our action project. Ting Ting as the cans were lifted off the ground and hit the barrel. We were done … ready to get first, second or third!

‘Okay guys’, If you would like you can all go for a walk over to the native area and do a little bit more work for Berky to judge this afternoon. Then later on we will get together and plan the rest of the day.

‘Chev can I use the rake bro’, I said. ‘Here,” he said as I was slowly crawling to my feet. ‘Shot bro’. I said as my silky hands slowly clung to the wooden fibre. “I will just start raking up the leaves on the western side over here,” I said. ‘Today we are going over to our sustainability action projects so Miss Crothers can judge us for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.’ ‘Okay Sport Stars you’re up’, said Mrs Fielder.

“Okay so sport stars … how do you think it’s going with the system for the P.E shed?” said Miss Crothers. ‘Its actually going really well because we have all been working together to keep it tidy and keeping it going for other people to use the gear,” I said. - By Huntah.

“Fabulous fudge, fudge, get your fudge!” Logan sang out hoping the customers would come pouring in.

Working cost
We practised our maths skills while making and costing our fudge. We had to use our understanding of multiplication, division and fractions.
For example: If a block of butter has 500g and cost $5.00.

We need 25g, 25 goes 20 times into 500 so the butter in the batch cost 25c.

Selling

“Johnny my man, what do you want?” He had lots of choice.

“I want that big box.”

“That will be 5 dollars exactly please.”

“Will I get change?”

“No sorry Johnny,” I replied.

But we usually did have to give change. So we had to find the difference between what they gave us and what they owed. Sometimes we subtracted what they owed and sometimes we turned it around to an addition problem. eg $2.50 + ___ = $5.00.

It was all quite popular. During selling we sold out of White choco, Dark choco, Big mack and Small mack.

We worked out that we earned $112.40. When we take off our expenses our profit Is around $85. That amazed my group.

Manawatu Young Cyclist of the Year

On Friday the 4th I competed in the Manawatu Cyclist of the year. We had a road rules test. It was multi choice and wasn’t too hard.

Then we did two obstacles courses. Some of the activities were a sharp u turn, distractions, biking as slowly as you can for 10 seconds and stop signs. We had to remember to use hand signals and to look for traffic.

After that we had a sausage and a drink. Then prize giving. The finalists have to do a big course over in Palmerston North coming up soon, competing against kids from all over the lower middle of the North Island. It was a very fun and worthwhile experience. - By Ethan.

Digi-awards.

The 5 Digi-award finalists from this school were Alex, Brooke, Lacey, Keanu and Ethan. They all sent in 1 entry, but Alex sent in 2. Well done to all 5 of these students, also to Mrs Fielder and Mrs Cuming. Over 600 kids attended the awards. - By Lacey.

Senior EOTC Camp

Yesterday Caleb and I, with some of Rangi School, went on our school senior camping trip.

Mrs Fielder picked Caleb and myself up and took us up to Jock’s place.

We got lost driving to Jock’s place .. not a good start!

We finally got to where we started to walk up the big hill. We stopped for a little something to

eat on the way up. When we got to the top where Jock’s hut was, we all went bush bashing through the native bush. We saw some native birds.

“Did you see that?” we said to each other so excitedly. We explored the bush some more. We walked in a single file over some slips. As we were walking around the bush, everyone was pointing out Deer prints.

At 6pm we went Deer stalking. In the end we saw 10 deer!

We all had a ball and I hope we can go next year so we can get more excitement in the bush. My favourite part of the trip was making the fire and stalking the deer and cooking the marshmallows on the fire.

So thank you so much Jock for all your hard work that you put in on the camp. We got so much out of it and lots of photos.

We are currently planning to take our Whanau group Enterprises to a wider audience. We aim to sell our sweets at the Feilding Market on Friday the 16th of December ... when we are in Feilding for swimming lessons.

In order to improve our product we would appreciate your feedback. We are currently creating a survey form to send home. We would appreciate it if you could fill it in and send it back to school. We really do appreciate your support!

Farewell

Sadly we farewell Ethan and his family as they move to Palmerston. We have been lucky to have time to really get to know Ethan as a learning partner and friend and will miss him and his family. We will have a shared lunch on the 24th of November. Please bring finger food to school suitable to share. You are all very welcome to join us!!

Athletics

We are currently practicing for the Oroua Athletics sports on the 2nd of December. Weather permitting, we will be practicing each afternoon. Students are well set up to challenge themselves at each station in our athletics rotation. They always learn more with, at the moment, encouragement and advice to improve their throwing and jumping techniques. If you are able to help either daily or as a one off, please let Mary or Nicki know. Could you please remind students to be prepared with shorts and t shirt suitable for athletics practice. Many thanks.

Scholastic Books

Junior Small Ball Day – Friday 11^th November

Thank you to all those parents who have offered transport to and from this event.

A reminder that we need to leave Apiti School at about 9.00 so we are at Kiwitea School by 9.25.

Please have your child wear their school uniform, take a really good lunch, a drink, warm clothing, sunhat, and if it looks like it could be hot, sunscreen.

The day should finish at around 2.00pm. Parents are most welcome to stay for the day, but if you leave, please make sure you return for pick up by 2.00pm. Students will be back at Apiti School in time for the afternoon bus run.

There will be sausages, water bottles and possibly muffins available to buy for $2.00.

After School Athletics

The After School Athletic Club will start again this Thursday (the 10^th) and will run from 3 to 4.15pm every Thursday until the Oroua Group of Schools Athletic Sports. Athletics will not run if it is raining, but if it is fine at 3.00 it will still go ahead.

Swimming Lessons

These continue at the Feilding Makino Aquatic Centre on Friday the 18^th of November, then Friday the 25^th, Wednesday the 14^th of December and Friday the 16^th. Thank you to those parents who have informed me of the days you are available to take transport. Welcome to Week 2 of Term 4, 2011 and a very busy term this will be!!

This term we have hit the ground running, with the digi awards presentation evening at the Regent Monday 31st October (we are very proud of winning 6 finalist places in this ! ) Lamb and Calf Day on Thursday 3rd November (don't miss this amazing event, it showcases our wide curriculum ! ) This term is only 8 weeks and once again we have a huge and varied number of learning experiences planned. Through our authentic contexts we deliver a curriculum which is personalised to students needs to develop them as creative, confident, connected, lifelong learners. This term we look forward to sharing this with the Education Review Officers when they visit our school on the week of the 21st of November.
Also this term is the Year 7/8 senior survival camp with Rangiwahia on the 8th and 9th of November. Other Oroua events include the Junior Small Ball Day at Kiwitea on 11th November. The Oroua Athletic Sports at Timona Park on Friday 2nd December (pp 9th Dec). The Year 8 Oroua Leavers Dinner is the 6th December at the Apiti Tavern. Our swimming programme (see the calender for dates) continues at Makino Pool. Thanks to the Board of Trustees and ASSA for continuing to subsidise the cost of this for parents. Also thanks to parents for transporting students to and from Feilding. Please make it easy, by using this day as your town day and offering transport early.

At Apiti we are proud to have an active group of parents, staff and a supportive wider community who fundraise, access grants and help at school, so we can continue to provide our wide learning opportunities. We have no school levy fee at Apiti and we don't charge parents for such things as education outside the classroom experiences, resources, up to date information technology. We appreciate those who just say "how can I help at school ?" We have a great community, with many and varied skills. There are those who help with the lamb and calf rings, lunches, trailride, judges, donate, transport, support students, as well as those who promote our school, or those just say "thanks".

Lamb and Calf Day - Thursday the 3rd of November
It's great to hear once again that all our students will have a lamb or a calf on this day. This is part of our science curriculum and we value the opportunity for students to raise a calf or lamb. Unfortunately sometimes at the last minute something untoward may happen - ring us if you need help. Please check the wiki for what your child needs to bring and the students are well aware of their responsibilities (especially the seniors) and should not leave everything to the last minute.

As usual we provide the judges with lunch, thanks to ASSA for organising this. There will be sausages available for the students for lunch. As part of How it Works Unit each whanau group will have sweet items for sale, although we expect these will sell fast. So remember to bring some cash for this.

Judging of all the students indoor displays will be carried out in the morning and the Lamb and Calf judging will be after lunch. Could all lambs and calves be at school well before 1.00 please. Tie them to the fence to settle down before their competition. The lamb and calf judging will commence at 1.00pm. When the outside judging is completed the classrooms will be opened to view the inside exhibits, unless the weather requires us to be inside earlier.
The pre-schoolers are welcome to join in this day with their own, or a borrowed animal, and their event will be in the ring straight after the school students. They will receive a certificate. While the judges are adding up the points there will be fun activities such as the best dressed lamb and calf and a drinking competition (lambs 200mls and calves 2 l ).
Prize giving will follow and then afternoon tea will be served. Could we ask parents to bring along a plate for afternoon tea please.

We are hoping for a fine day but will be running this event regardless of the weather, so please come prepared.

Please remember not to wash your lamb - a good light regular brushing is all that is needed. You may wash your calf, but make sure you do this on a warm day, rinse all soap out of its coat and rub it dry with a towel. Regularly check that its collar isn't too tight and don't forget to take it off when your Lamb or Calf gets bigger.

Lambs will be judged on Leading, Calling and Rearing. There will be junior, intermediate and senior sections for lambs and a junior and senior section for calves. Calves will be judged on Leading, Walking Without a Lead and Care and Attention.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be running during this week and are display in the main block foyer. Lamb and Calf Day is a great day for everyone to have a looks at the books and place orders in time for Christmas. Please remember that the school benefits in way of receiving free books from Scholastic from the amount of books sold. Thank you to Jo for her help with running this Book Fair.
At the end of the day children can take home the items made at school that morning such as the decorated gumboot, minature garden, novelty hat, vegetable / fruit sculpture.

However you may want to enter these into the kids competition section at the Manawatu Show happening in Feilding this weekend.

We welcome families, friends, neighbours and relations to the school for this day. Visitors are welcome to come along any time from 12.00 noon.

Judges Lunches

Caleb - Year 8

Leader of our Blue duck regeneration project, Healthy Foods Programme; ‘Bon Apiti’, Plant experts, and bush development, Caleb demonstrates excellent initiative and environmental awareness. Role model and leader in both Apiti and Oroua sport.

Ethan - Year 6

Lead in our annual production, presenting and teaching others using ICT, excellent musical strengths and commitment in all sport. An innovative creative thinker, Ethan has brought many whanau group enterprises to life.

Caleb and Ethan will join other high achievers from our area to receive their awards this Friday.

Board of Trustee Meeting

Lotto
This year we are running lotto again. When you purchase a ticket you will get a number, for only $50. Then you are in the draw each and every week to win $25 each time your bonus number comes up. Numbers are drawn out of the hat at Lamb and Calf Day so get your orders in quickly. This is a great Christmas present for those hard to buy for Dads, relations and friends especially Grandparents. Your present lasts the whole year!! Its a great way for businesses you deal with to help us by sponsoring our school, so please take the opportunity and mention it to as many businesses as possible.

Ski Trip Accounts

These accounts were sent home towards the end of term 3. Thank you to those who have paid their account, prompt payment is very much appreciated. Those who still need to pay, please do so at your earliest convenience.

Bon Apiti
This term we will be making pizza and, being a summer term also have jucies available. Lunches are available each Tuesday and Thursday and cost $2.00 a slice.

Apiti Bush Weedbuster day
The bush block we are guardians of, continues to regenerate. This is accelerated in spring. We have planned the afternoon of 8th of December to introduce our new school members to our bush and ensure it is clear of weeds over the summer holidays. We will need parent support for each whanau group please.

Senior Survival Camp - Year 7 and 8
Senior students from Apiti and Rangiwahia are in full swing planning cooperatively for this. Details are being added by students to the Senior Camp Wiki. See the link for this at the top of our newsletter.

Interschool Country Kids Challenge
We have two teams entered in this at the Manawatu Show this weekend.

Thanks to Sheree and Tania for offering to manage the teams.

They will complete a series of farming related challenges. The competition begins at 11a.m so if you are at the show, I am sure they would love your support! We wish them well!!

Cooking

As we have in previous years, whanau groups will cook an item for Lamb and Calf day. This year all Whanau Groups will also cost, design, make, package and market a sweet/ series of sweets. This will be completed in whanau groups before Lamb and Calf Day and their produce will be sold on the day. Through this authentic learning activity we aim to further develop:

Whanau group skills such as planning and organisation, leadership, managing self, relating to others and participating and contributing.
Financial Literacy
Cooking and Packaging (geometry and measurement)
Marketing

The aim for each group is to make the tastiest treat ... and the most profit when their books are balanced!!

Digi Awards

The Manawatu Principals' Assoc has been thrilled with the number of entries they have received ... over 600 entries from 27 schools in the region. These are currently being judged. We have been given a limited number of tickets to the inaugural Digi Awards Evening on Monday, October 31 at 6.30. We would like to offer them to our interested students and their parents. Our 'How it works ' learning is being shared and celebrated in three very worthwhile ways.

Lamb and Calf Day

All digiaward entries were delivered to Palmerston North on Friday and students really are on a roll with their lamb and calf day learning tasks.
This week we will be beginning to paper mache the bases for our lamps. Your children will need to bring an interestingly lamp stand base eg shaped bottle (plastic juice flagon) to paper mache over. We will be discussing suitable shapes and/or bottles on Monday. You may also have some great ideas to discuss with your children!
Thanks to Sara for donating the lampshades. They are in the office if you would like to see them. The aim is to have the bases covered before the holidays. This give them time to dry and they will be painted in week 1 next term. Students could also use photos or paper as their final layer, which could be sealed with clear polyurethane.

End of Term Assembly

This Friday we will have an 'End of Term Assembly' starting at 2.00p.m. All parents, grandparents, caregivers and members of the community are most welcome to attend.

School will start for term 4 on Tuesday the 25th of October (not Monday as previously stated), as Monday is Labour Day.

Science Fair

Dear Parents,

Science Fair

This Science Fair is tomorrow (Thursday the 29th September), at Kiwitea School. We need to be at Kiwitea School by 9.30, therefore we need to leave Apiti School by about 9ish. The day will finish at 2.00pm (at Kiwitea Hall) when we will then travel back to Apiti.

The bus will run in the morning but not in the afternoon, therefore parents need to contact your child' s driver to arrange for drop off or if your child is dropped off at school, you will need to arrange for them to be picked up from school.

Parents are welcome to stay at Kiwitea for the day but if you leave, please make sure you are back in time for pick up at 2.00pm.

Children will need to wear their school uniform please, there will be no food for sale, so please make sure your children take a good packed lunch and a drink.

Start time - 9.45

Morning tea - 11.15-11.30

Lunch - 1-1.30

Science demonstration - 1.30-2pm. Home.

Newsletter Week 9 Term 3 2011

Welcome to week 9 of Term 3, 2011 and there are only two weeks of term 3 left!!

We are in full swing pulling together and preparing our learning to share with others at the Oroua Science Expo on Thursday and the Digi Awards, due Friday. Our students have consolidated what they know and some great new skills and knowledge developed

through these learning opportunities. Challenging learning opportunities such as these really do allow for enhanced learning! It is great to see. Thank you to everyone who has supported from home with photos, research etc too!

Oroua Science Expo

We will be sharing our learning in science through investigating at our Oroua science expo at Kiwitea school this Thursday. Our students will share their power point / display and many have designed an interactive learning component for students from other schools to learn from too! We also look forward to learning from the science investigations completed by students from the other schools in our Oroua group. This will be reciprocal teaching and learning led by Oroua students. We will need transport for Thursday, so please fill out the attached transport slip and return it to school by Wednesday.

All students should now have bought their photo to school, if not please make sure all photo's are bought to school on removable drives or camera cards urgently. Students are currently finalising their Science Investigations for the mini documentary section. Also the 'In a perfect world ...' advertisements. They will also be creating their Graphic design with a environmental / sustainability theme this week. These will be entered into the digi award competition this Friday. Lamb and Calf Day

As shown on the google calendar, the date for this is Thursday the 3rd of November.

Students are currently working, at school and for homework, on their indoor exhibits for this event. These are:

'How it works' Science and technology investigation.
Creative digital photograph.
Graghic design - message about sustainability and looking after our environment.
'In a Perfect world ...' Advertisement
Decorated lampshade and stand.
Art - A3 picture of your lamb or calf.

Students are currently thinking about the indoor exhibits completed on the morning of Lamb and Calf day. These will be decided and posted on the blog in week 10.

Could all last year cup winners return your cups to school all polished up before this year's Lamb and Calf Day please.

Bon Apiti

We are sorry that there have not been any healthy lunches this term. The reason: we have been focussing on our learning tasks for the digi awards. There will be healthy lunches again next term on a Tuesday and Thursday. We will have homemade pizza and jucies for sale. - By Chevelle on behalf of the Bon Apiti Committee.

Swimming Lessons

Each year at Apiti School, we take the whole school into the Feilding Makino Pool for swimming

lessons. We have developed a plan for our students in conjunction with the National swimming advisers, coaches and the Makino Pool staff, to action a swimming programme which will give the students the best opportunities to learn to swim and water safety. The students have a lesson late morning, have lunch/break and then a second lesson after which they are able to practise what they are learning. Students will be assessed and taught in ability groups. The first lessons start on Friday the 4th of November (day after Lamb and Calf day). The other dates are still to be finalised, but will hopefully be once a week every week for the next four weeks. More information will come home closer to the time.

Celebration for Apiti School! Professional Development

Last Monday both Mary and Nicki were asked to present to the Network Learning Community leaders in the lower North Island. This included schools in both the primary and secondary from Iona to Pukeokahu. Mary also attended on the Tuesday to share our learning further and learn from others. There were many people who were interested in discussing the achievements at our school further.

Network Learning Communities have proved to be the most effective professional development tool for schools to use. Schools operating at a higher level can get together and share their successes, achievements, challenges and learn from one another. This year we have been involved in three Network Learning Communities. We are proud that our Apiti Learning Community has not only asked to be part of these groups but are also asked to present and share what we are achieving and our successes. This reflects the high standard of learning for students at our school. Also the high level of teaching and learning for our teachers. We are always open to new ideas and strategies which help learning. We really are proud of your children and our whole teaching team, who value and drive our ongoing rich learning

opportunities at all times.

Presentation focus: How e-portfolios are used by students at our school to document progress,

achievement and motivation for learning.

Reading through investigating

On Thursday the 22nd of September Travis, Logan, Lacey and Jack did some experiments. We used a bowl, milk, dishwashing liquid and food colouring. When we put the dish washing liquid in the food colouring went away fast as. Then it came back.

We put seven teaspoons of dish washing liquid in a bowl. We put about half a cup of milk in the bowl and mixed it together. We noticed how the liquid moved and changed.

Learning how glass works

On Tuesday the 30th of August, 2011, we had a man called Ben come and teach us about glass.

Glass is made using three special ingredients; sand, silica and soda. Lime helps glass stay like rock and not dissolve in the rain. He even bought a glass buoy.

There is a special tool called a blow pipe that is used to stretch out the glass.

Oroua vs North Street Netball

On Friday we drove to North Street to play a game of netball. We got into our positions and the starting whistle blew. “WD … WA! Here!” The commotion started. Round and round … tick tick went the clock. The pressure was on. The ball moved down the court amongst yelling and passing. We had a chance; a wonderful chance. Finally one goal!! We had such a big score to catch up! Plonk … Poppy had got an intercept in the air. She flew like a bird flying away. - By Hannah

Rugby

The whistle blew! Dropkick! It was the start! Wow that was high! Boof! North Street has it. First tackle made and …knocked on! Oh my goodness, I can’t even hold onto the ball. Crouch, touch, pause, engage! Yeah! First scrum … the ball was loose … The whistle blew. “Try,” said the referee. - By Huntah

Kieran booted the ball down the field like the ball was a balloon. I sprinted up the field following Daniel’s step. I was hoping the ball wasn’t going to go out as it was trailing ever so slightly to the right. Finally it landed bouncing to the left. I was now running past Caleb and the North St School centre had the ball clasped in his sweaty hands. We were cheek to cheek as I lassoed my arms around his waist and slammed him to the ground. Suddenly I got bowled over by Caleb blowing over. End score 19-42 to North St. - By Tom.

Oroua Soccer

Thank you to all those parents who supported their children and provided transport to the Oroua soccer tournament last Friday. The day was fabulous with the weather being beautiful and with some great soccer being played and teamwork developed with Jock commenting on their good ability and good attitude. A huge thank you to Jock for coaching and Neil and Caleb for refereeing on the day.

Capital E

Thanks to those who took transport to the Capital E production at the Regent. These learning experiences help provide our students with a wide and varied education. The show “Hear to See" used amazing sound and light techniques which fit in with our digital IT focus showing students what can be done. It was great to see the renovations at Te Manawa, and all students enjoyed the Kids Zone and this too supported their learning in How it Works.

Potatoes

This week I will be making chocolate chip muffins for Blind Week. These will cost $1.00 each. The money will be sent to the Blind Foundation. - By Ethan C

Welcome

We would like to welcome Sarah to our school as a brand new 5 year old. Sarah is the younger sister to David. We know Sarah will enjoy learning at Apiti school.

We would also like to welcome Cara Crothers, the Massey University College of Education Student, who will be with us for the next three weeks. We hope Cara enjoys her time with us.

How it works ... Glass!

Thank you Yvonne for driving the bus to Ben's Studio in Kimbolton last week!

Tuesday last week we went to visit Ben’s glass workshop in Kimbolton.

The first thing that Ben said after welcome, was the rules!
1) You must wear covered footwear
2) Do not touch unless told to

He showed us the glass cutter. It’s sort of like a pen with an oil in it.
The blade was tiny but it will cut thought 1cm of glass.

Chips and Frit are tiny bits of glass made from off cuts of glass.

This is how you make chips or frit.

1)Wrap big bits of glass in 3 newspapers
2)Use a hammer to smash the glass for 1-2 mins
3)Unwrap the glass
4)Sieve the glass into bowl
5 Repeat steps 2,3,4, with bits of glass that are left in the sieve until it all goes through.
6)Change the grade of sieve depending on the frit size you want

The next thing he showed us was different types of glass.
Different types don’t mix as well as others. The types that don’t mix glow round the edge when a light is shone through the glass.

I found the glass cutters were interesting as the blade is not like a wood blade with big teeth. It’s more of a flat blade.

After playtime it was time to sit down and watch Ben do some artistic work. Ben had not cleaned out the blow pipe from the last time he used it so he could not blow through it.
It did not take long to soften the glass in the glory hole.
The softened glass sort of worked like a glue to pick up the next piece.
With the softened piece of glass it went a bit floppy so he made it more of a cylinder shape then heated it up again. In half a minute he was making it into a balloon.

Soccer

We are currently training for the Oroua Tournament which is to be held next Friday (the 23rd) in Feilding. All students will be involved as there is a junior and senior competition. We require transport for the day. Please let Christine or Nicki know if you are able to help with this.

Students need to be prepared with PE gear every day.

Skiing

This was a really great day! The weather was great, the support from our parents was great and the effort from our students to learn on the slopes was excellent. From learning conversations on our return to school we know that students learnt alot; not just how to ski but about how we learn in a new environment! The abundance of snow certainly enhanced the Mt Ruapehu experience. Students are currently reflecting on their learning and these learning stories will be uploaded to their wikipages, for you to share, as they are completed. We are already setting goals for our next ski experience!! With the snow as it is, it would be great if the opportunity arose for students to put what they learnt in their lessons to practice again.

For the school, planning and organisation is always a huge commitment but the amazing learning certainly makes it all worthwhile. A special thank you to Mary on behalf of all the students and parents for all the guidance, patience, enthusiasm and help she gave all the children on the ski slopes.

Capital E Performance - Junior Room Students

This performance - 'HEAR to SEE' is happening tomorrow (Tuesday 13th Sept.) at the Regent on Broadway in Palmerston North. The show will start at 10.00a.m. but we need to be seated by 9.40, so we will leave Apiti School by 8.40. The school bus will run 1/4 of an hour earlier in the morning for all children so that the junior children will be ready to be picked up from school by 8.40.

After the show, we will have lunch at the Esplanade (weather permitting) and then visit 'Te Manawa' before arriving back at school in time for the afternoon bus run.

Sports Report - Saturday 10th September

Rugby:-

A very well organised 'World Cup' was held :-

All teams played 6 games. Logan and Ben's team Wellington, won 5. Logan scored lots of tries. Hayley, Tyler and Alex's team Ireland won 5 games and all three players scored 5 tries each.

Ashleigh's team Russia, made it to the finals and won the under 11 grade.

Tom's team England made it to the finals and won the Under 9 grade.

Huntah's team Ireland made it to the semi finals but lost their game.

Prize-giving.

Logan received the 'Player of the Year' and Ben the 'Most Improved Player' certificate for their Under 8 team, Wellington.

Alex received the 'Player of the Year' certificate for his ripper rugby team, Ireland.

Caleb's team Stags, won the Manawatu B grade competition for the 2011 season.

Caleb received the 'U12 Best Tackler' certificate.

Tom received the 'Best Tackler' certificate for his Under 9 team, Manawatu.

Huntah received the 'Best Tackler' and the 'Player of the Year' certificate for his Under 9 team, Auckland.

Netball Prize-giving :-

Capital E Visit - Tuesday 13th September

Next Tuesday the junior room students will be travelling down to Palmerston North for the Capital E performance of 'HEAR to SEE' at the Regent on Broadway. This show is scheduled to start at 10.00a.m (but we need to be seated by 9.45), so we will need to leave Apiti School by about 8.45. After the show and if the weather is fine, we will have lunch at the Esplanade (alternative arrangements will be made for lunch elsewhere if it is wet) and then we will visit the Te Manawa Science Museum before heading back to Apiti. We will be back in time for the afternoon bus run.

A reminder that if your children are not going to be on the bus either in the morning or afternoon to please ring Yvonne. If Yvonne does not answer the phone, she would appreciate it if you would leave a message.

We will need transport to this event, so please fill in the attached slip and return it to school by Monday so I can organise transport.

Children will need to take a packed lunch, a drink and please wear their school uniform.

Parent Ski Notice - Wednesday 7th September

Dear Parents

We have just viewed the weather forecast online for Mt Ruapehu for this Wednesday and it looks good for our ski trip to go ahead this Wednesday.

Unless I have recently sent home a Health Profile Medical Consent form for you to fill out, we have your child's details on file, but please let us know if there are any changes regarding medical problems, doctor, allergies, cell phone numbers, or emergency contacts which were filled out in your child's health profile for the previous EOTC trip to the Hawkes Bay.

Accounts will be sent home regarding payment for this ski trip. Please remember the ratio of adults to students effects the final price. We will spread the eligible discount for adults across those supervising our students on the whole mountain.

Anyone is able to upgrade on the day, but it is much easier to decide now what you are doing.

Please make sure your children have a really good packed lunch for the day, including drink and high energy snacks. Please also make sure that they have any medication that they may require in case of allergies or asthma.

TIME :- You will need to leave home at about 6.15 as we will meet at Ohakune at 7.45, so we are up the mountain before long queues form.

We will gather at the Information Centre / Public Rest room area on the left hand side as you drive into Ohakune. We would like the students to have a substantial morning tea in the park and then we will make our way up the mountain. We will leave here just before 8am.

We are unable to give you a drop off time, after skiing, as it will totally depend on the weather. It the mountain packs up, we will be home sooner rather than later, but if it stays lovely, we will stay until 4pm when the mountain closes. Please contact your driver to make pick up and drop off arrangements. You can phone Mary on 0276506581 for an update, if necessary.

It is suggested that everyone wears gumboots from the car-park to the equipment hire place. Please make sure that your children have good quality warm/wet weather gear (named) available to put on. Suggested equipment for the day :-

Waterproof jacket and pants. Warm layers of clothing to account for changeable conditions. Warm, waterproof gloves or mittens. Thick warm socks. Warm headwear (e.g. beanie). Goggles and/or sunglasses with full UV protection. Sturdy footwear. Sunscreen for exposed skin and lips - minimum factor 15+, re-apply sunscreen regularly. Plenty of energy snacks and fluids. Remember sometimes it gets really hot up there.

Term 3 really is flying past. Students are in full swing with their learning in technology and it is a great opportunity to further develop our skills using ICT. What a great way to share our learning!

Ski trip

We are busy planning the ski trip while there is such good snow for the 7th Sept pp 14th Sept.

It will be along the same lines as previous years, and as you know it is far cheaper to go with the school group than to go as a family, but the costs have gone up so please check carefully . We appreciate payment straight after the day, as the school organises a credit application. There is an opportunity to upgrade on the day. Part payments are also welcome before or after the day.

As we are hoping to go on 7th Sept please email me ASAP your plans, so we have booked numbers but need to update these, so please send final details.

As you know we will not go if the weather is at all doubtful. It's just not worth it. Sorry

We feel it's better to travel up twice than to stay up there; cost and fitness wise. We missed out last year so 2 separate days might be an option this year, but it's up to parents.

Please send names for Discover Ski / Discover Snowboard (which includes gear), including ability levels for those we don't know.

Please also include whether you require a full mountain pass or up to different levels eg beginner mountain pass. Remember you can upgrade on the day, but its easier to book what you need now and less hassle for Mary.We also need height, weight and shoe size, we will do that at school for students.If we send it all in before the day our gear is ready and waiting for us.Remember we have some gear at school which you are welcome to and it's always a good idea to borrow, NAME everything esp gloves! and wear named gumboots from the carpark to the gear hire centre.

If you have not been before you will be amazed how quickly the students pick it up and can ski/snowboard after the first lesson. Please make sure your children have a really good large packed lunch for the day, including drink and high energy snacks. There is food available up there, but it is very expensive. There is free water available on the mountain. Also, please make sure they have any medication that they may require in case of allergies or asthma.We value giving our community this opportunity as it is an authentic opportunity for our students to learn many skills, not only how to ski and snowboard but how to face challenges and self manage ... another bonus of attending a small school!

Scientific Investigation - How it Works - This will be showcased as a Movie or powerpoint to educate others. It may be supported with a hands on experiment or model. These will be shared at the Oroua Science Expo on the 29th of September.
Points from persuasive speeches (Term 2) are being used to create an "In a perfect world ...") advertisement. Persuasion using visual language.
Environmental Sustainability Graphic design
Music creation and song writing (This is an extension from our poetry writing and music focus in term 2)

Although the focus is on information technology and communication, this really is integrated learning, with students further developing in all areas of our curriculum.

Glass Technology for Senior Room Students Our Glass Programme dates have all been put back a week. Ben will be visiting at 9am tomorrow to introduce this amazing medium. The following 2 Tuesdays (Dates are on calendar) we will be visiting his studio in Kimbolton. We require transport for this. Could you let us know when you can help please.

Artistic Apiti

The Feilding Art Society have invited us, along with Kate and Mageo, to set up a display celebrating some of Apiti's talent at the Art Society in Feilding. We will focus on pottery and painting. Many of the jugs your children created for lamb and calf day were fantastic. If you would be happy for your child's pottery or art work to be displayed please bring it into school this week. We will be taking our display pieces to Feilding on Friday

.Interschool Rugby / NetballThank you to those parents who helped out with transport to training and to Colyton last week, your help was very much appreciated.

Game on … An exciting game of netball

On Thursday the 25th, at 12

o'clock, we drove down to Colyton to play a game of netball. We got onto the court and went into our positions.

We waited nervously till the moment came when the whistle blew. The whistle finally blew and we were running all over the court. I was GS and Charlotte was WD. We had to stick to our players like glue and we would come apart then come together again. Our players jumped like rabbits as they tried to get the intercepts. We were neck to neck. Then Colyton gained and were three goals ahead of us and we had one more quarter to go. We had to get four ahead if we wanted to win.
We had to step up our game. The shield was waiting to come home again. We were feeling scared we were going to lose. So in the fourth quarter we were calling names to get the ball. The ball flew though our hands down to our goal. Boom boom boom as the goals kept going in. Three minutes until the game finished. 3...2...1! The whistle blew.

We joined our team and started screaming. The sound of relief and winning was flowing through our ears. We all shook hands and went and supported the rugby people. They won too but it was just a friendly game.

We really enjoyed playing Colyton. They are a really good team!!

Rugby with Colyton

On Thursday the 25th of August, 2011 a selected group of Apiti, Kimbolton and Rangiwahia kids all joined together to make a combined team to play tackle rugby!!
The venue for the tackle rugby game was Coyton school. We had to leave at 12:00 noon to be there at 12:30. Mrs. Fielder said that we would have lunch with Colyton School as it was a great opportunity to meet new friends!
Colyton only had 6 players so we gave them some of our players! Luke, George and Connor were the front row with Caleb and Ashleigh, the locks. Bailey at halfback, Daniel at 1s t5, Tom at 2nd 5, Kieran at center and Jack at wing. This made a ten a side team. We played a friendly game of rugby; whereas the netball was playing for the shield.
As the whistle blew, Luke offloaded to the backs and we scored the fist try!! At half time Northern Oroua were ahead. While we were having a drink we watched some netball. Then we were straight into it. I caught the ball but "Smash"!! Huntah and I smacked heads ... “Ow," I thought to myself as I picked myself off the ground. A ruck formed across the paddock. As I noticed it, I saw the ball and sprinted over and ripped the ball from where it lay . “Smack” as the ball hit the ground as the last try was scored.
After a great game, Northern Oroua had won with netball also winning 9-8. Northern Oroua had kept the shield! Cheers filled the air!

Next week (a date still to be confirmed) we will head to North Street School to play against their senior representative teams. Training will be held this Thursday (thanks Megan for your offer of transport) and the following Monday at Kimbolton school. If you are able to take transport for any of these please let us know.

Student Teacher

Cara Crothers, Massey University College of Education Student, will join Nicki to teach in the Senior room for three weeks from the 12th of September. We look forward to welcoming her on board and sharing our teaching and learning at Apiti School with her.

Attendance Matters

The Ministry of Education has recently published and distributed to all schools a booklet entitled "Attendance Matters" which are new guidelines for schools for implementing an effective attendance management plan. These guidelines outline processes for unjustified absence from school.

Our school usually marks attendance on paper, but we will soon be doing it electronically.

This booklet was presented and discussed at the recent Board of Trustee meeting and a copy is available from school if you would like to read it.

Lamb and Calf Day

This event will happen on Thursday the 3rd of November. Please mark this date on your calendar. We would like to encourage all students to participate on this day by bringing along a lamb or a calf. We suggest that lambs and calves are born on or between the 1/07/11 and the 3/10/11. We welcome families, friends, neighbours and relations to the school for this day. An entry form will sent home at a later date.

Potatoes

We have bags of potatoes for sale, selling to you for $7.00 a bag. These have been kindly donated to us by the Corbett Brothers from Cheltenham - a huge thank you to them and thanks to Jock for picking them up for us.

Rugby

Caleb's team, Stags - 86, played Bulls - 14. Caleb scored 1 try.

Ashleigh's team, Crusaders - 5, played Highlanders - 5.

Tom's team, Manawatu - 18, played Waikato - 7. Tom scored 7 tries!!!

Huntah's team, Auckland - 4, played Northland - 9. Huntah scored 1 try.

Netball

Hannah and Charlotte's team, Oroua - 5, played St. Josephs - 11. Hannah shot 1 goal.

Soccer

Our next Oroua sport is soccer with the interschool competition at the end of this term. We will begin practice this week so all senior students need to be prepared with PE clothes. If you are able to help with team training please contact Nicki or Huntah.

Parent notice re Colyton rugby/netball

Wednesday 24th August.

Dear Parents.

Oroua Rugby / Netball at Colyton

Tomorrow (Thursday 25th August), most of our senior room students, plus students from Rangiwahia and Kimbolton, will be travelling down to Colyton to participate in a game of netball and in a friendly game of rugby. Those students not involved with either of these games, will remain at school.

We will need to leave Apiti School before 12 noon to be at Colyton by 12.30. We will have lunch with them, socialise and then have the games. We will return back to Apiti in time for the afternoon bus run.

Players will need to take a good packed lunch, a drink, shorts, rugby boots (for rugby) and warm clothes to put on after their game.

Rugby players are also asked to take a mufti jersey please.

Northern Oroua Rugby and Netball Trials

Last Thursday, some of our senior room students attended netball and tackle rugby trials at Kimbolton for the Northern Oroua Schools (Apiti/Rangiwahia/Kimbolton) 10 aside rugby team.

Well done to all those who were keen to trial for these teams. The next trial will be this Thursday (18th). Those selected will be notified when the teams are finalised. Thanks to Jock and Doug Brodie (Rugby) and Jo Eastwood for their part organising and coaching the team. Thanks also to Sheree and Nipper, Megan for helping with transport.

Hockey

A big thank you to Tania for offering to transport and support those interested in playing hockey at Waituna West school. This will be each Monday for the next 5 weeks as from today.

Learning about Glass

Over the next 3 weeks we will be learning about glass, a little bit of history, how it is made and used. This links well with our technology focus and inquiry as to "how it works." Ben visits us on the 23rd of August and then we will spend time learning at his workshop in Kimbolton for the remaining two sessions (30th August and 6th Sept). We will require help with transport for this learning. Please contact Nicki or Mary if you are able to help with this.

Board of Trustee Meeting

The next Board of Trustee meeting has been changed to Monday the 22nd of August (not the 17th as previously advertised), in the school staff room, starting at 7.00pm. All members of the public are welcome to attend.

Science Expo

We are planning for the science expo. All students have confirmed topics, as part of the 'How does it work' unit. We expect them to investigate an area of interest especially focusing on how it works. This could include ideas such as diagrams, model making, innovations or improvements on a theme, and flow charts may also be included.

As part of our science focus for this term, we will also be entering the BP Challenge this year.

Most farmers have now sprayed for Porina and thistles - Excellent!

Next Tuesday the 9th of August, there is a Beef and Lamb day at the 'Chelty' from 11 - 12 and then at Apiti from 1 - 4pm.

This is an excellent chance to get something from your levy money. One of the guest speakers / demonstrators will be Hester Guy, cooking lamb. It would be great if the area could give 100% support to this meeting. Hope to see you all there. - Jock.

Tavern News - Hi everyone. What a good turn-out we had for June and Murray's welcome home party. It was really good to see so many attending and I think everyone enjoyed their meal. I had lots of positive feedback, even from as far away as Feilding. Week 9 - Caleb K - Stepping outside your comfort zone and working to make our production successful through commiting to your part and helping others with theirs e.g. Cole´s car, The three little pigs rap, listening to others ideas and developing costume and character. Well done Caleb

Week 10 - Ethan - Really stepping up in all areas of school life. Developing excellent initiative and leadership and setting yourself high standards. This was especially evident throughout the school production. Fantastic to see Ethan!! Keep up the great work.

Farewell

We say farewell to Heath and Charnce who have been with us for the past 3 weeks as they have returned back to their school in Levin. We hope they enjoyed our school as much as we enjoyed having them with us, great they were able to take part in our production and cross country and share in the many other experiences of our small rural school. We wish them both all the best for their future.

Concert

The concert was the best, again! Congratulations to all those involved, especially the students! Once again, it provided many learning opportunities for all students, from the wider NZ curriculum. Our concert caters for the learning needs of our students and is the vehicle for developing and showcasing their creativity. It develops the whole student, especially in the key competency areas of self managing, participating and contributing.

We could not have done this without the help and support of many people and we thank all those who were involved with this successful production. This includes :-

Cross Country

Congratulations to those who braved the elements at Waituna West School on Friday at the Oroua Cross Country. The tough training schedule paid off for many, although the competition was very tough in many age groups. The weather in the form of rain, sleet, wind and hail, as well as the creeks, bogs, stones, hills and thistles did not deter our runners. All can be very proud of their efforts.

Many thanks to Waituna West for organising and running this event. Also thanks to those who marshaled for us.

Thank you to all those parents who transported children to this event and for your support.

We will let you know of the top 10 placings in each age group when we receive the results from Waituna West School.

Science Expo

We are planning for the Oroua Science expo . All senior students, (and by the end of this term junior students) have confirmed topics, as part of the "How does it Work ' unit. We expect them to investigate an area of interest especially focusing on how it works. This could include ideas such as diagrams, model making, innovations or improvements on a theme and flow charts may also be included. Please check out http://apitischoolwiki.wikispaces.com/How+it+works+.. This maybe presented in a variety of formats eg as a mini documentary for the digi awards or as a powerpoint.

As part of our science focus for the next term, we will also be entering the BP Challenge this year.

ICT Student Lead Conference

Thank you to those parents who transported students to and back from Lytton St School in Feilding for this conference recently. We appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule for the students who attended this event.

Assembly

Assembly will be held this Friday, the 15th of July in the senior room starting at 2.00p.m. Everyone is most welcome.

What's happening ...

Production Practice – "The Three Little Pigs" and "The BIG BAD Pig "

We are in our last week of practice for our annual production. Everyone should know their words for the plays and songs, and their cues. Each character is designing organising their costumes and props. The production is an integral part of our learning and includes all areas of the curriculum. Thank you for supporting your children with this! We will be having a matinee / dress rehearsal next Tuesday afternoon for the Oroua schools, playcentre, and welcome pre-schoolers on this day. Our evening performance will be next Wednesday, the 6th of July at 6pm in the senior room. We look forward to sharing our fractured fairytale, with you all!! Parents, Grandparents and friends are most welcome to join us! Supper within the theme is also being made and will be served by the students.

Cross Country Practice

We are all currently training for the Oroua Cross Country. Over the next 2 weeks all students will run their distance both around the school and up the road in order to continue the fantastic motivation students are showing. Both runs are supervised and of a similar distance to their run on the day. Please make sure your children bring shorts to school every day for training. We also welcome parents or community members to run with the students.

We have organised a training run on the course next Thursday the 7th of July. Could you please let Nicki know if you would like your children to take this opportunity and if you are able to help with transport.

Oroua Group of Schools Cross Country

This event is happening on Friday the 8th of July at Waituna West School. This involves the whole school. We ask parents to make their own transport arrangements to this event please. There will be no school bus running at all on this day unless the event is cancelled. The phone tree will be used if this is the case.

You will need to have your children at Waituna West School by 10.00am. All children will then walk the course in their age group with a guide. Races will run in the following order from 11.00am onwards:-

7 year olds, 8 year olds - distance 1550mtrs.

5 year olds, 6 year olds - distance 900mtrs.

9 year olds, 10 year olds - distance 2150mtrs.

11 year olds, 12+ year olds - distance 2420mtrs.

Boys and girls will run together but will be recorded separately. Certificates will be awarded after each race.

Students need to wear their school uniform and please make sure your children have warm clothing, their lunch, a drink and suitable footwear to run in as they will be running over and through stones, water, mud, thistles and fences.

There will be sausages, drinks, tea, coffee, muffins and chips for sale throughout the day.

ICT Student led Conferences
This Friday the 1st of July, 10 senior room students (oldest down) will be participating in the Feilding ICT Student Lead Conferences at Lytton St School in Feilding. Four of our students will be teaching students from other schools how to use picnik and photopeach. They will also have the opportunity to go to break-outs (workshops) and learn from students from other schools.

This is an amazing opportunity. Even though the ICT Cluster funding has now ceased we are continuing these great learning experiences, thanks to Ange from Lytton Street School.

This is an all day activity that will require transport to and from this event. Please contact Nicki if you are able to help.

Flu Illness

There is a nasty flu virus around the area. Thank you to those parents who have kept their child/ren at home while they are unwell as this helps to prevent the spread of the virus. Making sure they have plenty to drink and are kept warm while at home is very helpful. We hope all will be well and ready for the concert night. Please keep us updated !

A huge thank you to Brendon Cook (Cole's dad) for donating several large buckets with lids attached. These will be extremely handy to store a multitude of items in.

Also a big thank you to Pam Strahan and Christine Digby for cooking with the students last Friday. They made several trays of shortbread biscuits and thoroughly enjoyed the baking.

Production Practice – The three little pigs

We have been learning our lines really well. Mrs. Fielder told us that we had to know our lines by today …MONDAY. I’m sure they would love to practice them with you! If your kids come home and have pulled all of their clothes out on to the floor, it is probably because they are having a look to see if they find something to help them with their costumes. - Cheers Ashleigh

Apiti School Speeches. We all shared our speeches at the last school assembly. It was great to see everyone delivering a speech, even the students who are new to our school. WHAT IS OUR NEXT STEP FOR THE PE SHED.

Maybe we could make the PE shed a two store building so we can get more equipment in the PE shed. We could buy things like hula hoops, skipping ropes, soccer balls, and rugby balls and other stuff and we could pump up the balls. - By Jack.

Chess Competition - In Kimbolton there is a school chess competition at the rugby club rooms. It will be held on Friday the 24^thof June 9:30 – 2:30. Entry fee of $4.00. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. We have chess boards at school for practising. - By Logan

DEVELOPMENTS with the RECYCLERS

On Thursday the 2^ndof June we went to our Apiti Community meeting at the Apiti hall. We told them about when the Council came and talked to us about the ‘mobile recycling centre.' We talked about why we think a Recycling centre is important in Apiti. We told them about where we should put the mobile recycling shed so that it is used by everyone but is slightly out of the way. They are going to bring it in to Apiti next year. They are going to come and have a look and we will discuss it further closer to the date.

Cross Country Training

Training for the Oroua Group of Schools Cross Country happening on Friday the 8th of July at Waituna West School, is progressing well with training runs and fitness every day. Everyone's circuit times are improving all the time. Please remember to come prepared for this i.e running shoes, shorts. - By Huntah.

An Experience

“Ahh,” I screamed as I howled in pain.

Somebody help!" I yelled at the top of my lungs. I had crashed on my bike!

" I yelled at the top of my lungs. I had crashed on my bike!

“ Huntah help me!”

“ Sure thing bro,” Huntah said. He got me up and helped me to the staff room.

“Are you ok Cole?”

“ No!” I shouted.

“I’ll get you an ice pack and a panadol and then I’ll ring your mum.” Mrs. Fielder asked mum to come and pick me up to take me to the doctor. Mum drove as fast as she could, putting the pedal to the metal! It was only minutes before she got to the school. Mum helped me to the car.

“Ahh!” I exclaimed as my foot touched ground. I had accidentally put my foot on the ground!

Well the car was almost empty of fuel the way she was driving. We almost got run off the road a couple of times! Soon we were at the doctors.

“Hurry up!” I said in my pain, I just wanted to scream at the doctors … hurry up! hurry up!!

“Cole,” the nurse shouted.

“That’s me,” I replied. My foot was killing me! The nurse escorted us to the x ray room. I looked at the x ray lady and thought … I’ve seen her before She was the one that x rayed my shoulders. She moved my foot on five different angles to take the x ray and then we moved back to the waiting area.

It was only moments later that the doctor rushed out and said I had broken some bones! I was experiencing disbelief! Personally I didn’t think it was that bad!

So the nurse took me to the plaster area and they plastered my leg. Mum took me home and set me up with an Xbox game and tea. And that is how I broke my foot! - By Cole.

Condolences

Apiti School would like to offer our condolences to Ngaire and her family on the passing of Ivan. Ivan George taught at and was principal at Apiti School for about 10 years around the late sixties to early/mid seventies, educating and influencing many of our local children to achieve to reach their full potential and goals. Ivan wrote the very interesting and very much referred to book 'Apiti Where's That?' Our thoughts are with those who have lost a much loved husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Dairy Farmers - Help Affco Support our School - "Cash for Schools"

Through Affco's 'cash for schools' scheme, Affco will donate 40c for every bobby calf you supply in 2011 to the rural primary school of your choice - hopefully that's us! This will not come off the schedule payment; it is a donation on your behalf over and above the price you receive for your calves. All you need to do, is nominate your desired primary school (that's us)! on your Seasonal Animal Status Declaration form and at the end of the season Affco will donate to (that/our) school 40c for every calf you have supplied to Affco. We would really appreciate any funds received through this scheme.

Oroua's Rhythm Interactive

On Monday the 13^th of June all of us at Apiti school are going on a trip to Kimbolton.

We will spend the morning at Kimbolton School. Each school has organized a learning activity. Here are the activities on Monday: dance, stick games, ukulele, singing and jump jam. There are five groups. In the afternoon we will go to a show at the Kimbolton Hall. Remember to wear your uniform on Monday. We are going by car (Mrs Cuming, Mrs Fielder and Mrs Prince) and bus. Thank you to Yvonne for driving the bus for us and also Bernard Lilburn for letting us use it for this great musical day .

1.00 Speech Competition (thanks to Matt Thomas for judging this for us) This is a celebration of our school speeches and supports our oral language programme. All senior students will be judged and one or two year 6-8 student will represent our school at the Oroua competition.

What's been happening ...

Music Tuition

On Wednesdays the whole school have music lessons with Mrs. Beard and Mrs. Pratt. We are learning some fun songs for our production; "The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig." Some of the songs are "We are Family..." and "Bad to the Bone" by George Thoroughgood - most of you will know that song. We are very lucky having these teachers because we all enjoy learning these fun songs. - By Hannah.

Teaching Wikis

A wiki space has all our school learning and work on it. Students from Apiti School buddied up with four Kiwitea students and we showed them how to use a wiki. We help a lot of people. Apiti is really helpful with wikis. - By Lacey.

Learning the Ukelele

1) Last week Kiwitea senior school students travelled to Apiti School. They were here to teach our senior students the Ukelele. They bought 14 ukuleles. They played "The whole world" and "In the Jungle." Next we partnered up and Kiwitea students showed us how to hold the ukuleles and press the strings down. These are called chords and we learnt Am, D and C. At the end we played Kookabarra and Mrs Fielder videoed us.- By Logan

2) On Tuesdays, Mrs. Eastwood gets the ukuleles ready for our practice. She shows us chords like C and F and C7. Mrs Eastwood explains how to put our fingers on the strings. Next she shows us how to strum up and down. Songs we have learnt are "Row row the Boat," the "Kookaburra" and "R2D2." I like singing with the ukulele. - By Travis.

New Ramps

We are happy with our new ramps. Everyone at school has had fun on them, even kids with out any thing to ride have been having a good time running up and down the ramps. There has been mostly the scooters that have been riding on the ramp. All of the skilled scooter riders have been going up the ramp 180ing and coming back down. There has been a few bike riders and they go up a ramp and then they turn around and go back down and then they jump off the side of the other ramp. These ramps have been really fun for us. - By Cole.

We hope everyone can leave the ramps where they are put, so they are not damaged further and we have to remove them for safety reasons. We were also very sad to find out the metal strips which were placed at the bottom the ramps was removed in the weekend. We would welcome the return of these, no questions asked. If we can not keep these ramps safe, we will have to reconsider their appropriateness. - Mrs C

Learning with AJ

Today at school we made music and animations. Some students bought some plastic animals and others have to make their own from plasticine. We made our music on ACID Music Studio 0.7. - By Chev.

Thank you to the Corbett Brothers for donating bags of potatoes for our Fundraising. They have been a real hit. We still have a few bags left. Just a reminder they are for sale for $7 a bag. - By Ethan.

Plant Experts

We received 5 trees from the 'paper for trees' scheme. Each time we recycle paper, we get trees for the shade house. The recyclers recycle paper and cardboard so the plant experts get the plants for the shade house. It is like a life cycle. - By Charlotte

School Speech Competition / Assembly

Students are currently writing and practising their speeches and will share these at school assembly this Friday the 3rd of June starting at 1.00p.m. The best of our speakers will represent us at the Oroua Speech Competition being held next week. Hope to see you all here then.

Oroua Speech Competition

The Oroua Speech competition will be held on Thursday the 9th of June at the Oroua Rugby Clubrooms starting at 1.00pm. The two best speakers from each Oroua school will represent their school. The whole senior room will go along to support the Apiti speakers. - By Ashleigh.

Rhythm Interactive

This will be held on Monday the 13^th of June at Kimbolton. Workshops will be held at Kimbolton School in the morning and then the show will be in the Kimbolton Hall in the afternoon. The whole school will travel to Kimbolton for this day. We will need transport please. We will leave Apiti at 9.00am and return in time for the bus. Parents are most welcome to come along to watch and help out or to drop students off and then return in time to pick students up. Please return the attached transport slip to school as soon as possible. The transport list will go home next week.

Production

The Production is coming up on the 6^th of July, so make sure your child/children know their part. The play is the three little wolves and the big bad pig. - By Tom.

Cross Country Training

On the 8th of July we have the Oroua Group of Schools Cross Country. We are training every day for fitness. We run around the school 3 times each day. Next week we will run up to Caleb K's farm, then sprint up to the highest hill in Apiti. Everyone's circuit times have improved and we are expecting to be fit for the day. - By Huntah.

The next Board of Trustees meeting will be held this Thursday the 2nd of June in the staff room starting at 7.00p.m. Please view the agenda on the blogspot or refer to the attached agenda on newsletter dated 16/05/2011. All members of the community are most welcome to attend.

After School Winter Club

After School Winter activities will take place every Tuesday from 3 – 4.30pm for school age children. Activities will include making sweets/lollies and crafty things. The cost is $5.00 per child or $10.00 per family which will be to cover the cost of materials. Please phone Deltina on 3284 529 or Wendy on 3284 525 if you require further information.

Hayley, Tyler and Alex's team Ireland - 12, played England - 11. Tyler scored 4 tries! Hayley and Alex 3 each.

Caleb's team Stags - 7, played Freyberg 27. The Stags were the first team to score points against Freyberg.

Ashleigh's team Crusaders - 41, played High School Old Boys - 10.

Tom's team Manawatu - 14, played Northland - 11. Tom scored 4 tries! and was awarded Player of the Day!

Huntah's team Auckland - 10, played Wairarapa Bush 2. Huntah scored 5 tries!!

Logan and Ben's team Wellington - 20, played Hawkes Bay - 12. Logan scored 7 tries!! and Ben 4 tries!

Hannah and Charlotte's team Oroua - 14, played Lytton St - 0. Hannah and Charlotte both shot goals.
